Why (and how) to stop night feeding?
🇬🇧 👶 In France, it's still rare to have a first visit to the dentist before the age of 3 (even if it should be!)
💔 So every time I see a toddler on my agenda, my marshmallow heart jumps. I know that people do not come to consult me "by chance" and that there is a good chance that there are already plenty of cavities in the mouth.
🌙🍼 The cause? Bottle feeding or breastfeeding at bedtime/overnight that has been going on for too long.
😴✨ When we sleep, we salivate less and our teeth are less protected against decay. Add to that a daily dose of milk, a super sweet food and it's the guaranteed disaster!
‼️ Attention: there is no question for me to say that you have to stop giving milk to children from the arrival of the first tooth!
👉 A bottle as a "dessert" in the evening before brushingteeth, for example, does not increase the risk of caries.
👉 It's a matter of timing: from the moment you have teeth, when you diversify the diet, it is better to avoid multiplying food intake and promote 4 meals (breakfast, lunch, snack, dinner) per day.
🤯 It can be complicated to stop the bottle at bedtime: it's part of the ritual, the bottle reassures, the sweet taste relaxes...
🤗 If you can't stop it directly, here's a simple method that works great! 😍
